Open And Kind Secular Homeschool Cooperative
WHO
We are a cooperative for homeschooling families interested in a community mindset, specifically geared toward children in the 6-13+ age range (siblings of students are always welcome to join and we are actively attempting to expand our group with the tween/teen ages.) We are a secular co-op that values scientific, fact-based teaching and has no religious affiliation.
Our co-op is dedicated to cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all families, regardless of race, gender identity, religion, ability, or sexual orientation. Embracing diversity, inclusivity, and equity are fundamental to our core values. We stand in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community as well as communities of color. We are in support of basic human rights and are committed to fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for all individuals, ensuring that each person feels valued and respected while at OAKS. Our group strives to be a safe space where everyone feels empowered to embrace their truest and most authentic selves.
While we welcome diverse perspectives and encourage open dialogue, we also recognize that certain political ideologies can be harmful to minority groups. These ideals, when unchecked, can perpetuate systematic inequalities and injustices that disproportionately impact marginalized communities. Our commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ communities and communities of color include challenging harmful beliefs and fostering a culture of understanding, empathy, and equality for all.
WHAT
We gather together to participate in adult/parent and student-led classes, comradery, community service projects, extracurricular classes with guest teachers, and other shared educational experiences. We also organize group field trip opportunities in the greater Cleveland area including visits to playgrounds, museums, zoos, and trips to the Metroparks. Additionally, we schedule regular child-free parent/guardian social outings to encourage comradery with the adults in our community.
WHEN
We meet weekly from September through May on Tuesdays from 10am to 2pm. Periodically, we will meet on other days for special trips or to celebrate together. During the summer months, we stay connected by offering monthly meet-ups and encouraging informal group gatherings.
WHERE
We are serving families on the westside of Cleveland. This includes (but is not limited to) Westlake, Lakewood, Avon, North Olmsted, North Ridgeville, and Fairview Park, down through North Royalton, Parma, Berea, Middleburg Heights, and Strongsville. Our families stretch from Wakeman/Oberlin all the way to Cleveland Heights. During the warmer months we spend most of our time outdoors, rotating to various spots including libraries, parks, homes, playgrounds, and community centers, trying our best to meet centrally to make it easy on our members. In the winter months, we rent space at the Olmsted Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
WHY
We’re parents who had a need for a community and decided to build it ourselves. As homeschooling parents it can be exhausting and overwhelming to identify a group that fits your needs. While we know we’re not going to be the perfect fit for everyone, we will strive to assist in your search for a community that serves your families needs. Additionally, we offer support to those on the homeschooling adventure by being available to answer questions and provide resources to new homeschooling families.
